AMD Ryzen is here! $500 for 8-core 1800X CPU, undercutting Intel by $600

AMD Ryzen high-end Summit Ridge CPUs have finally been priced to consumers! Intel has priced their similar i7-6900K chips at around $1,100. AMD is now undercutting Intel by $600! The Ryzen 1800X will cost $500 and will use 45 Watts less than Intel’s chip!

AMD is also bringing lower tier CPUs to the market, let’s compare those chips below!

As you can see the AMD chips seem to be more power efficient which will save you some money in the long run specially if you leave your computer on all day and night. The lowest tier AMD chip also comes bundled with a cooler which will also save your a bit of money as you will not have to purchase a separate cooler like you would with the Intel counterpart.

If you do decide to switch to a new and shiny AMD Ryzen CPU you should keep in mind that you will need to purchase a new motherboard with the new AM4 socket as your old AM3 and AMD3+ socket will not work for these CPU’s

The new AM4 socket motherboards will also support DDR4 memory which you can easily swap over from your old intel setup if you choose to switch sides but you WILL NO be able to use your old DDR3 memory if you have an older AMD system.

So it seems to be a trade-off which might be a no-brainer to AMD users that have a 6+ year old AMD CPU. The issue is you will need to build a whole new system. Most AMD users won’t mind as they most likely have been saving up for this day to come, and will gladly shell out the cash to build a new top tier system. Additionally some of the old parts such as their beefy power hungry Power supply, Case, cooler, HDDs and GPUs will happily work and probably perform better on a new AM4 Motherboard.

The Intel users that want to switch will be able to use some of their old parts such as power supplies, case, cooler (if you have an AMD bracket), HDDs, RAM and GPU but will need to purchase a new motherboard and a new CPU which could add up if you choose to go with the higher tier CPU granted you will be getting a hell of a chip that performs on par with a $1100 CPU and you will not spend that much on a new motherboard and CPU.

So what do you think? will you build a new system? will you switch from Intel to AMD? Let us know in the comments below!
